Infographic What UK tenants want

What tenants who rent a house or flat want

Four million people rent houses and flats. A third are aged 25-34 but the fastest growing age is 35-44, including more and more families [figures from 2011 UK Census].

Here are the results of a YouGov survey of 2,300 tenants' views, including 1,000 London tenants commissioned by Savills.

Reasons for renting were largely financial but more younger tenants gave flexibility as a reason
Everyone would like a clean well-maintained house with plenty of space.
Good transport links: a railway station or good public transport, near to friends and family.

London tenants spend more time travelling to work.

Most tenants spend about a quarter of their income on rent. There may be more sharing in London to explain why renters in London spend a similar proportion.

The main reason for moving was to move into a better quality property. Tenants complained of damp or mould, and were unhappy with the fixtures and fittings, complaining that their landlord was replaced broken appliances with poor quality equipment. A quarter of tenants moved out of a previous property because of poor management. Many would like to report problems by text or email.
